Importance of Minerals in Foods
Our body is not capable of producing all the nutrients and minerals to be able to work properly. This is the reason why we have to consume them externally. To actually understand the importance of minerals to our body, we will first need to know what exactly the minerals are. While our body is pretty much organic, it still needs certain substances which are inorganic, such as minerals. These minerals are found naturally in many non-living beings, such as rocks, water, soil, and even in animals and plants. Some of the minerals are required by the cells of our body so that they can function properly. We get the minerals needed for the cells from the plants and also from the water we drink.
There are a lot of bodily functions that require the minerals. For instance, they are required for the proper blood flow, skin, building bone strength, hair, metabolism and even the neural functions. This implies that the minerals are imperative for the normal functioning and growth of our bodies.
Although different minerals are needed in different quantities by the body, still they are all vital. The minerals that are needed in bigger amounts are termed as macro-minerals. The minerals which are needed in relatively smaller amounts for the body to function properly are called micro-minerals. Some of the minerals that our body needs are iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and zinc.
Body’s mineral requirement depends upon several factors including gender, age, illness, and any particular physical condition. Remember that excessive intake of the minerals can also have harmful effects on the body.
